The key to the success of Habitat for Humanity is its volunteers. Habitat has three areas where people can volunteer. The most widely known is volunteering to build a house. Each house build has a core of experienced volunteers that guide the "off the street" volunteers like us on what to do. Habitat also has a "Brush with Kindness" program in which volunteers help repair an existing home. Finally, there are opportunities to volunteer at a Habitat ReStore to arrange and price merchandise.
If Habitat for Humanity - Collin County is not convenient, check your local city / county as they have operations all across America.
There are a number of charitable organizations that have decided to receive pop can tabs. The reason they collect only the tabs is that storage is easier and the aluminum is not contaminated by paint or residual soda. While it takes a lot of tabs to make a pound of aluminum (approximately 1,500), the aluminum is sold at the nearest recycling center and the funds are used to help defray the operational cost of the House. This allows for more donated funds to be used for families. Tabs can be dropped off in the bin outside the House any day. You can also sell the tabs (or the whole can) at a recycling center near you and mail the money received to the House as a donation.
